How Can I Stay Safe While Driving Late at Night?

Riding a bike at night can be dangerous if you don't take steps to make sure you are doing so safely. You will face a lot more potential hazards when on your motorcycle at night, so it will be imperative to make sure that you as well prepared as possible. You will have to spend a bit of money on the right equipment, but this is part of motorbike riding expenses and will be preferable to becoming involved in an accident that could result in a serious injury. It's really not worth the risk of not preparing to ride when the sun has gone down.

Getting Ready

The first thing you'll need to do is make sure you have the right equipment. It's best to start with your bike. Obviously you'll want to make sure that your bike is fully roadworthy, but this will apply to daytime riding as well. It will be particularly important to make sure that your bike's lights are working correctly. Use ISO-approved bulbs in your lamps and make sure that they operate properly. Check that your dimmer works and that your lights turn on and off correctly. Failure to do so could result in an accident. If you cannot dim your lights when approaching oncoming traffic, you could cause an accident by temporality blinding other riders or drivers. If your lights are not working correctly, do not ride at night until you have had them fixed. Take your bike to a mechanic if this is the case.

You'll also need to make sure that you can be seen. It's a good idea to buy a luminous vest to wear when riding at a night. You can get a vest that will slip over your protective clothing. This will make you more visible to other road users. It would also be wise to buy some luminous strips to fit on the body of your bike. This will be useful if you breakdown and have to wait at the side of the road for assistance. You can also apply glow-in-the-dark stickers to your helmet.

Before you set off, plan your route. Avoid travelling on back roads that are poorly lit and stick to main carriageways that you know have good street light coverage. You'll want to make sure that you choose the safest route possible. You should also check the weather report before you set off on a night ride. If adverse weather is forecast, it might be an idea to cancel your journey or choose an alternative means of transport. Night riding in heavy rain or snow or dense fog can be especially hazardous. If you must ride in the dark when conditions are poor, make sure you travel slower than you would normally and keep a greater distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Pack a fully-charged mobile phone and some food and drink in the storage compartment of your bike. These will come in handy of you breakdown and need to stop by the roadside. It's also wise to have a basic repair kit on you when you're late night travelling. This will allow you to sort out any minor problems that may occur while you're riding. You should also make sure you always travel with some money or a credit card. It will not be a lot of fun breaking down in the middle of nowhere without any money. If you have some funds, at least you'll be able to find a hotel or a cafe to shelter in while you resolve the situation.
